Orion First to Offer Certification to ISO 18587 in North America

18587: Translation Services – Post-Editing Of Machine Translation Output

Introduced in April 2017, the ISO 18587 is a new worldwide standard to address the increasing adoption and use machine translation (MT) systems by translation service providers (TSPs). Given that MT systems are not dynamic and sophisticated enough to equal the quality and accuracy of human translation, physical post-editing is required to ensure a quality final translated product. The focus of the ISO 18587 standard begins with the delivery of MT output, through the human task of post-editing, and is intended for use by TSPs, their clients and post-editors.

The standard is comprised of the following main sections:

•     Post-editing process – Includes standards for pre-production, production and post-production processes. Also outlines the objectives in the post-editing process, requirements for post-editing MT output and post-editor’s tasks.

•     Competences and qualifications – Outlines the competences and qualifications required of post-editors, and overall professionalism required.

•     Requirements of full post-editing – The standard’s aim is to produce an output that is indistinguishable from human translation and ensure post-editors use as much of the MT output as possible.

•     Annex items – For post-editor training, light post-editing, pre-editing, client-TSP agreements and automatic post-editing.

ISO 17100 Translation Services - Released / EN 15038 Withdrawn
The new International Standard ISO 17100 on Translation Services has just been published (official date of publication: 2015-05-01). In the member countries of the European Committee for Standardisation this standard will be endorsed as European Standard EN ISO 17100 and will replace EN 15038.

Given the two Standards are more or less identical in their technical content, LICS had issued ISO 17100 certificates to all EN 15038 organizations (see attached). At this time, your EN 15038 certificates will no longer be valid and you will have to refrain from promoting your EN 15038 certification status. These certificates will have a new date of issue, the date of initial issue as well as the expiry date, and the due dates for surveillance remain unchanged. This means that you will remain at the same point in your audit cycle, and all future audits will be conducted to ISO 17100. (please see attached the ISO 17100 certification scheme from LICS). We suggest you obtain a copy of the standard which can be purchased at

Should you have any question regarding the new documents, please do not hesitate to call or email.
